Ray Preece, age 87, of Owosso, MI passed away Friday, October 7, 2011 at The Grand Rapids Home for Veterans, Grand Rapids, MI.
A Memorial Service will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes Jennings-Lyons Chapel Owosso, MI on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. Rev. James Eaton will officiate. Visiting with his family will be one hour prior to the service.
Ray was born in Gray Eagle, West Virginia on March 18, 1924, the son of Jasper and Lelia (Williamson) Preece. He resided most of his life in Owosso. Ray married Gayle Pierce on September 15, 1962 in Battle Creek, MI.
Ray was a bus driver for Indian Trails for 33 years. After retiring he drove for Thomas Transportation of Owosso for 3 years. He served his country in the U.S. Navy serving in the South Pacific during WW II. Ray loved to golf, fish and work in his garden. Spending time with his grandchildren brought him much joy. He was a member of First Congregational Church UCC Owosso, MI.
He is survived by his wife Gayle Preece of Owosso, MI, son Michael and Dena Preece of Owosso, MI, daughter Marla and Dirk Welte of Bancroft, MI, 5 grandchildren; Stephanie Paul, Jordan Preece, Jonathon Elliott, Jack Welte and Katee Welte, 2 great-grandchildren; Chloe and Kaydence, sister Velvie Maynard of Kentucky, and several nieces and nephews. Ray was preceded in death by his parents and 3 step-brothers.
