Raymond L. Kindig, age 89, of Owosso, MI died March 17, 2012 at Hospice House of Shiawassee County. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, March 23, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church, Owosso, MI with Rev. Calvin Long officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday, March 22, 2012 from 2-8 pm with the family present 2-4 & 6-8 pm.
Raymond was born in Dubois, PA on February 15, 1923, the son of Ralph E. and Ethel (Boner) Kindig. He grew up in Bay City and became an Eagle Scout while in high school. He married Barbara Barnhart on June 23, 1946.
Ray served in the US Army Air Corps as a tuba player and toured with Gene Autry. He was very artistic and loved to do instrument repair for area school students, loved woodworking and oil painting. Ray was active with the Owosso Community Players as Orchestra Director and was a tuba and cello player for Shiawassee Chamber Orchestra. He loved dancing, fishing, gardening and camping. Ray had a great sense of humor.
He graduated from Bay City Central High School, earned his Bachelor Degree from Albion College and his Masters Degree from Northwestern University. While at Albion College, Ray was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He worked as a band director in Angola, Indiana and in Belding High School. Ray became an Insurance Agent with Equitable Life Assurance Company where he received his Chartered Life Underwriter Certification (CLU) and then retired from Northwestern Mutual Life. Ray was a member of First United Methodist Church for 50 years and served as choir director for 20 years.
Ray is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara Kindig of Owosso, MI; three daughters, Susan Williams of Hesperia, MI, Deborah and Carl Knipe of Owosso, MI and Betsy and Edgar Kettle of Grand Rapids, MI; one son, David and Barbara Kindig of Lansing, MI; 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and one sister, Beverly and Keith Hardy of Johnson City, TN.
In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Carly Knipe and one brother, Russell Kindig.
