Richard R. "Dick" Sturgis age 82 of Elsie, Michigan passed away Thursday, October 16, 2014 at Ashley Care Center, Ashley, MI.
Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie, MI on Monday, October 20, 2014 at 11:00 A.M., with Dr. Donald Ferris-McCann officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2014 from 4-8 P.M. and on Sunday, October 19, 2014 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home.
Dick was born on November 19, 1931 the son of Jesse and Marian (Frink) Sturgis on Francis Road, Bengal Township, Clinton County, St. Johns, MI. He attended school in rural Clinton County on Francis Road, the Village of Maple Rapids, MI, Village of Sumner, MI, City of Alma, MI, Sheridan Road Country School, in Saginaw County, Flint City School. He came to Elsie in the 7th Grade. He graduated from Elsie High School with the class of 1950. While in school he played football, basketball, and baseball. He also worked at Cook's Drug Store in Elsie.
On September 22, 1951 Dick married his high school sweetheart Joanne Williams and they were married 63 years. To this union were born 3 sons; Daniel Richard, Douglas Lee and Dennis Carlyle. Dick served his country in the U.S. Army in the Korean War from May 1952 to February 1954. Dick was employed for 12 years at Universal Electric in Owosso, 21 years at Midland Ross Corp, in Owosso, and 20 years at Lear Corp in Elsie. He always enjoyed his jobs and his co-workers. Dick enjoyed woodworking, deer and pheasant hunting, and he was affiliated with the Boy Scouts for 30 years. He was a member of Elsie United Methodist Church.
Dick is survived by his wife Joanne, sons; Daniel and friend Kevin, Douglas, and Dennis and Anne, grandchildren; Ashley and Chris Aboona, Brandon Sturgis, Courtney, Erika and Shannon Sturgis, 2 great grandchildren; Riann and Tison Aboona, and sister Rose Marie (Bruce) Welton. He was predeceased by his parents, 4 brothers; Lawrence, Milo, Carlyle and Leslie (Tim), 4 sisters; Helen Hobart, Anne Ackles, Dorothy (Butler) Johnson, Laura Hovey, and several nieces and nephews.
