Robert Somers

Robert H. Somers, age 91, of Henderson, Michigan passed away Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Medilodge of Montrose, Michigan.

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie, MI on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. Burial will take place at Fairfield Township Cemetery, Fairfield Township, MI. Visitation will be on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 from 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home.

Robert was born in Chapin Township, Michigan on October 13, 1924, the son of Ted O. and Margaret C. (Bond) Somers.  He had lived on the family farm since he was 5 years old.  He served his country in WWII as a Staff Sergeant in the US Army; he spent 18 months in Germany.  On December 8, 1946 Robert married Arlene Marie Scott in Elsie, Michigan; Arlene died on May 26, 2015.

Bob was a farmer all of his life and had worked for Universal Electric in supervision, he retired in 1985 after 20 years of service.  Bob was a lifelong member of Chapin United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for 49 years and held other offices in the church. He also served on the Booth School Board.  Bob always felt he had a Guardian Angel watching over him. He loved his family and enjoyed each new member as they became one of family by birth or marriage. He enjoyed sports, especially baseball; he also enjoyed woodworking, gardening and fishing.

He is survived by 3 daughters; Patricia Capen and Tom Stanley of Greenfield, IN, Cheryl and Harry Kaplan of Dyersburg, TN, Carolyn and Don Folkes of Chapin, MI, 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, sister in law Kathryn Somers, and special nephews; Aaron Somers, and Donnie Somers.  He was predeceased by his parents, 1 brother Ted Jr. and son in law Ron Capen.
