Roy E. Thornton age 88 of Elsie, Michigan died Thursday, March 6, 2008 at Elsie, Michigan.

Funeral Services will be held at Duplain Church Of Christ St. Johns, MI on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Phil Beavers will officiate with burial at Maple Grove Cemetery Ovid, MI. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 9, 2008 from 6-8 P.M. and Monday, March 10, 2008 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.

Roy was born in Duplain Township, Michigan on September 5, 1919 the son of Theodore C. and Della ( Shinn ) Thornton. He resided most of his life in Elsie area and graduated from Elsie High School with the class of 1937. Roy married Ila J. Spiegel on June 16, 1940 in Rochester Colony. She passed away on April 1, 2003. Roy farmed on Hollister Road and worked at Federal Mogal in St. Johns. He retired from farming in 1968 and from Federal Mogal in 1980. Roy enjoyed fishing and hunting and he especially enjoyed his vegetable and flower gardens. Roy was a member of Duplain Church of Christ where he was an elder. He was very faithful to his church. He was also a member of the Elsie Lions Club where he was very active.

He is survived by his children; Larry & Carolyn Thornton of Roscommon, MI, Kayla & Ron Tipton of DeWitt, MI, Ronny & Kathy Thornton of Grand Ledge, MI, Judith & Ron Newman of Oregon, 6 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, brother Elmer Thornton of Elsie, MI, sister Mary & Russell Libey of Arizonia, sister-in-law Julia Thornton of St. Johns, MI, and several nieces & nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, wife, and 1 son Darrell Lynn Thornton.

Memorials may be made to Duplain Church of Christ, St. Johns, Michigan. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie Chapel.
