Russell Ernest Darby, age 82, of Elsie, MI passed away Monday, September 21, 2009 at Ovid Healthcare, Ovid, MI where he was lovingly cared for since April 2009.
Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes Elsie Chapel Elsie, MI on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. Pastor Eric Stanton will officiate. Visitation will be held on Tuesday September 22, 2009 from 4-8 PM and Wednesday, September 23, 2009 from 9-11 AM prior to the service. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Elsie, MI.
Russell was born in Marquette County, Michigan on January 24, 1927, the son of Ernest Frank and Blanche (Hendrickson) Darby. Russell was raised by his grandparents, Caroline and Ernest Darby in L'Anse and Marquette, MI.
Russell married Genevieve Matterns then later married Neva Shivley in November of 1957, she passed away Februray 7, 1994. He resided most of his life in Flint and Owosso areas. He served his country in the US Army 235th Combat Engineers in the Phillipines.
Russell retired from Woodard Factory in 2002. He enjoyed reading and watching sports especially football and car racing. Russell was a lifelong member of the Owosso VFW #9455. In recent years he attended Carland Zion Brethren in Christ Church.
He is survived by his daughter Loretta and Ed Pokorny of Elsie, MI where he made his home for 10 years before entering the Nursing Home; special friend Fran Nethaway of Elsie, MI; grandchildren; Deb and Rick Doubrava of Lansing, MI, Carla Burns of Kalamazoo, MI, Russ and Linda Shivley of Ovid, MI, Ron and Robin Shivley of Ovid, MI, Robin and John Hibbler of Ohio. Russell is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, wife Neva, son Russell Shivley, grandson Randy Shivley, daughter-in-law Ilene Schwartz and an infant daughter by his previous marriage.
