Shirley Bates

Shirley Jean (Elsworth) Bates passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2016 in Owosso, MI. at the age of 90.

Shirley loved and was loved by all, but none more than by her family, (brothers) Jay and Dale, (children) Carrie, Tommy, Jerry, and Clay, her 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Shirley was a native of Chapin Township and raised all her children there along with teaching a total of 31 years, 15 years as 7th grade math teacher at Chesaning Junior High School.  Shirley’s retirement plan was to become an accountant, she accomplished this and worked for H&R block for another 10 years.  Shirley enjoyed genealogy and spent many years researching and documenting the Elsworth, Vincent, Bates and Simpson family tree.  Shirley was known by all for her cooking skills, especially her holiday treats.  And no one will forget her cinnamon rolls.  Shirley enjoyed reading, needlepoint, cross-words and puzzles.

A memorial service will be held at Smith Funeral Homes Elsie, MI, Monday, May 30, 2016 from 2 to 4 PM.  A reception will follow immediately after the service at the Chapin Church Hall in Chapin, MI.
