Shirley Marie Cresswell age 86 of St. Louis, Michigan died Wednesday, November 15, 2006 at Covenant Healthcare Saginaw, MI.

Funeral Services will be held at First United Methodist Church St. Louis, MI on Saturday, November 18, 2006 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Lillian French will officiate with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery St. Louis, Michigan. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 17, 2006 from 5-8 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Louis Chapel.

Shirley was born in Springfield, Missouri on March 15, 1920 the daughter of James and Ina ( Akins ) Crutchfield. She resided most of her life in St. Louis, Michigan and graduated from Anderson High School in Indiana with the class of 1935. She then attended Michigan State College where she received a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry in 1941. Shirley married Richard Cresswell on February 27, 1942 in Sunfield, Michigan. He died in 1995. She started her career as the Lab Director at Smith Memorial and Gratiot Community Hospitals. In 1959 she became the Lab Director at St. Lukes Hospital in Saginaw. She was also the Director of The Medical Technology Program at St. Lukes. In the late 60's Shirley owned and directed the Professional Laboratory Service in Saginaw. In the early 1980's she became an Associate Professor at MSU teaching clinical laboratory Medicine. Shirley started a traveling medical clinic at Covenant Hospial. She then became a visiting consultant at Santo Tomas University Hospital in Manila, Philipines and maintained that position until October 2006. She traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and other countries lecturing on lab medicine and infectious diseases. Shirley was an avid reader of medical mysteries. She enjoyed her family, crossword puzzles, her cats, and Christmas with her family. Shirley was a member of the St. Louis First United Methodist Church as well as the ASCP, AAB, American Public Health Association, and the Michigan Public Health Association.

She is survived by 3 children; Patricia & David Rosenberger of Nokesville, VA, John & Laurie Cresswell of St. Louis, MI, Liane & Steve Slosson of Lake Orion, MI, 10 grandchildren; Stephen & Beth Rosenberger, Andrew Rosenberger, Camille Rosenberger, Jason & Sarah Cresswell, Lindsey & Brian Nellis, Josh Cresswell, Zach Cresswell, Matthew Cresswell, Jake Slosson, and Cara Slosson, 3 great grandchildren; Mary & Claire Rosenberger, and Lilah Nellis. She is predeceased by her parents, husband, son Tom Cresswell, 2 daughters Candace & Cara Cresswell, and 1 brother James Crutchfield.

Memorials may be made to Cara Cresswell Memorial Scholarship Fund at Alma College. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Louis Chapel.
