Thelma Ann (Mikus) Rowan, age 90, of Shepherd, MI passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014 at her home.

Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Elsie, MI on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 1:00 P.M. with Chaplain Bob De Weese officiating. Visitation will take place 2 hours prior to the service from 11:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M. Per her wishes, cremation will take place, and burial will be in Ford Cemetery at a later date.

Thelma was born in Bannister, Michigan on May 10, 1923, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Lovas) Chmiko. Thelma was raised in the farming community of Bannister, MI. During WWII, she worked assembling motors at Redmond's in Owosso, MI. She married Frank Mikus in 1945, and dedicated her life to raising her five children. She moved her family to Mt. Pleasant in 1958. Thelma retired from Central Michigan University in 1977. She married Kenneth Rowan in July 1977. They resided in Canada until his death in 1997. She then moved to the Shepherd area and lived there since.

Thelma enjoyed dancing to Polka music, camping with her grandchildren and large extended family, playing cards, working crossword puzzles, gardening and crocheting. She enjoyed baking traditional Slovak kolache pastries. Thelma especially loved spending time with her family. She was modest, happy, and content with life. She was always energetic and optimistic.

She is survived by 3 sons; James and Laura Mikus of Lapeer, MI, Gerald Mikus of Dade City, FL, Phillip Mikus of Mt. Pleasant, MI, daughter Joanne Mikus-Smith of Shepherd, MI, first husband Frank Mikus of St. Louis, MI, 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, sister Sally Foreit of St. Johns, MI, brother John and Nancy Chmiko of St. Johns, MI, sister Carole and Dewey Custer of Perrinton, MI, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Thomas Mikus, brother Joseph Chmiko, sister Mary Fabus, sister Helen Sipkovsky, and brother Paul Chmiko.
