Walter Komperda

Walter Frank Komperda, age 95, of St. Louis passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at Pine River Healthcare Center, St. Louis, MI.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, March 15, 2013 at 12:00 P.M. at Mt. St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Louis, MI with Rev. Fr. James Bessert and Deacon Al Oliver officiating. Burial will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery, St. Louis, MI. Visitation will be held on Thursday March 14, 2013 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. and a prayer service at 7:30 P.M. at Smith Family Funeral Homes, St. Louis, MI.

Walter was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 25, 1917, the son of Andrew and Julia (Vorcak) Komperda. He served his country during WWII in the US Army in the 49th General Hospital Division. Walter married Frances A. Sinko on May 10, 1947 in St. Louis. Frances passed away on August 17, 2001. Walter retired from Lobdell-Emery in 1978. He also owned and operated Walt's Wholesale Eggs. Walter enjoyed camping, fishing, picture puzzles and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of Mt. St. Joseph Catholic Church.

He is survived by son Tom and Carol Komperda of St. Louis, MI, daughter Debbie and Dave Mulka of Grand Rapids, MI, daughter in law Kathy and Dale Kortman of Houghton Lake, MI, 7 grandchildren; Andy and Jamie Komperda of Houghton Lake, MI, Emily Komperda of Mt. Pleasant, MI, Jon Komperda of St. Louis, MI, Jessica and Chris Beyer of Willington, OH, Jennifer and Bryan Kavc of Shelby Township, MI, Joshua Mulka of Grand Rapids, MI, Jason Mulka of Grand Rapids, MI. He is also survived by 2 great grandchildren; A.J. Komperda & Kaydee Komperda, 1 sister Antoinette Kanitz of Crystal, MI, and several nieces and nephews. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son Ted J. Komperda, sister Anna Baker, and 2 brothers; Paul and Joe Komperda.

The family would like to give a special thank you to his caregivers Jill Kleppert and her daughter Wren for the many years of tender loving care. Memorials may be made to Gratiot County Commission on Aging.
